Perhaps unsurprisingly, the day kind of unravels after that. Neither of them are particularly productive and, eventually, Newt found himself running a tub while Kavinsky sprawls on the bed in their room. Newt wanders back to the bathroom door, leaning his hip against the frame.

"Well," he says. "When we decided to give fostering a try, I don't think either of us were expecting this level of trouble from his girlfriend." He takes a sip of his beer. "Poor kid."

Kavinsky rolled over until he could hang his head off the edge of the bed, watching Newt from across the room. He felt strangely raw about the conversation with Sabrina, but that was probably part of fostering, being a parent of any variety.

"It's rough," he agreed, soft and slow. "But they're good kids."

Kavinsky grunted a little and rolled over to take the beer. He took a couple sips and then handed it back. He didn't mind Sabrina moving in--formally or informally--but it made the space feel a little tighter.

He unfolded out of bed and gently crowded into Newt's space, pressing their foreheads together.

Softly, he said, "Let's smoke a bowl."

"Except with cats yowling on the other side of the door," Kavinsky teased, staying close. He gave Newt a sweet kiss and then eased away. "Go open the window in the bathroom, I'll get the shit."

Kavinsky came in with a packed bowl and one of his various novelty lighters. He lit and took a long, slow pull on it, holding it as he set it down and undressed.

He blew the smoke toward the window and then curled behind Newt, nuzzling his neck gently. "You handled her really well. I think I just kinda fucked it up a bit."

"I wasn't trying to say it wasn't important," Kavinsky said. He sat on the edge of the tub, dipping his fingers into the water. "But like..."

He shrugged and rolled his eyes, and then slid off the edge of the tub and into the water. He let his legs continue to dangle up over the edge.

Kavinsky knew what that was like. There had been a point where he was resigned to loneliness and death because of who and what he was, so he understood things feeling important.

He sat up and grabbed the pipe to relight and take another rip. As he was holding his breath, he handed it over to Newt.

Kavinsky nodded, because there was no sense making a fuss over it now. She'd go and blow off steam, things would be hectic for a minute, and then everything would settle.

"Maybe I'll take her out to the forest sometime," he said. He didn't know if it would like her any more than it had liked him when he was that age, but she also wasn't a Dreamer. He thought the raw power would be good for her, though, maybe at some point.

He shifted in the water so he was facing Newt, toes tucked against his legs.

Kavinsky shrugged. He had an odd relationship with religion on the best of days--better now than it had been--and an even stranger relationship with what could be called demons, personal and physical.

Things would work out. They always did. It was finding the balance.

He leaned across and kissed Newt sweetly. "Being sober is terrible," he bemoaned gently against Newt's mouth, kissing him again.

"That's the worst part," Kavinsky said, a little melancholy about it. It had gotten to a place, in Darrow, where he didn't need to be high, didn't need to have that control over his perception of reality and how he wanted to experience time or emotions or anything like that. But without it, he was left very aware of linear existence and the onward march of life around him.

He smiled, though. Newt did know him better than anyone else in Darrow. Sure, there was a memory of a thing out in the forest, and the forest itself, but none of them were Newt.

"The kids aren't home," Kavinsky pointed out. He was trying to be good about being sober when Charlie and Sabrina were around, as much as he could manage at least. "And it's weed. It's not like I'm throwing a substance party in our bathroom."

He missed cocaine. He missed his sleeping pills. He missed--he looked at Newt and leaned across the space between them to kiss him softly.

Kavinsky considered. He'd stopped stripping because it had seemed the right thing to do to get his life under control, but he did miss it. He missed being that fit, and he missed the attention, and he missed Newt coming in and teasing him a little at the end of his shifts.

"We should go out dancing some time," he said. "We'll take a couple pills, make it a night out. There's plenty of condoms, Charlie probably won't knock up his girlfriend if we go out."

"God, don't say that," Kavinsky said with a laugh. He tried to not think about what happened behind Charlie's door. Especially since there was a girl involved.

"Let's go out," he said, taking a long, lazy drag on the pipe. "Let's make asses of ourselves and screw in a bathroom. We're twenty. We can still be wild."

Kavinsky laughed and lounged back, letting Newt rest against him. He set the pipe aside and ran his fingers through Newt's long, tousled hair. It had been much shorter when they first met, and Newt didn't let it go long, but there was plenty to play with.

"We'll make a good time of it," he assured.
